Mausoleum, Rum

The mausoleum on Rum is a miniature Greek temple located in Glen Harris, which was built as the last resting place for British industrialist John Bullough in 1891.

Its location on the west coast of the island is 15 kilometres from the village of Kinloch and is entirely remote.

Rum was once the private domain of the Bullough family who bought the island as a private shooting estate. Kinloch castle which was built as their holiday home, now lies abandoned.

Annie Jane

Oil on Calico, 2023

40 x 30 inches

£2500

The Annie Jane was an emigrant ship with over 450 people aboard that sailed from Liverpool on the 9th of September 1853 on a voyage to Quebec.

The 350 men, women and children who lost their lives are interred on Vatersay somewhere in two mass graves amongst the dunes.  The exact location of the graves is unknown. There is a lonely monument that overlooks West Beach on the island which is now the only sign that the tragedy ever happened.

It is estimated that by 1853 as many as 70,000 Highlanders and Islanders had been evicted by landowners on the West Coast of Scotland over the course of 100 years.
